Translating Novel Diagnostic Pipelines in Rare Genetic Movement Disorders into Personalized Patient Management
Matej Skorvanek is Professor of Neurology, Chair of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the Faculty of Medicine, P.J. Šafárik University, and Head of the Movement Disorder Unit and Center for Rare Movement Disorders at Louis Pasteur University Hospital in Košice, Slovakia. He obtained his PhD from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, and completed fellowships at Charles University in Prague and University College London. His research focuses on genetics of movement disorders, biomarkers of prodromal Parkinson’s disease, and advanced therapies, including deep brain stimulation. He leads several research initiatives, including the Slovak Brain Health Mission, the Central European Group on Genetics of Movement Disorders (CEGEMOD), and the Promoting Excellence in Research of Underrepresented Populations and Early Identification of Movement Disorders project (PURE-MD) project.
He serves on the Executive Committee of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS), is Associate Director of the MDS Clinical Outcome Assessment Program, and is the former Chair of the MDS European Education Committee. Prof. Skorvanek has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications (H-index 29). His current work aims to translate advances in genomics and biomarkers into improved diagnosis and personalized care for patients with rare genetic movement disorders and Parkinson’s disease.
